Venography

Venography is an imaging test used if an ultrasound does not provide a clear diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This test can determine if the blood flow in a leg is obstructed.

Venography is performed in the Radiology Department and takes about 60 - 90 minutes.

A contrast dye is first injected into a vein in the ankle or foot, and then x-rays of the leg are taken. The dye allows the blood flow within the vein to be visible on the x-ray. A blood clot in the vein will prevent the dye from flowing into that area, and it will appear as a ‘gap’ or ‘defect’ in the blood vessel.
