Teaching

The Thrombosis Clinic at VGH is a medical education facility. Our hematologists are involved in teaching at all levels of the medical curriculum, from medical students to residents to research fellows. At the Thrombosis Clinic, medical trainees learn to assess patients for thrombosis disorders, provide state-of-the-art treatment and participate in clinical research.

Research

We conduct clinical trials of drugs and interventions that help improve the care and outcomes for patients with venous thromboembolism. Patients who come to the thrombosis clinic may have an opportunity to participate in clinical trials. Our physicians and research nurses help identify patients who may qualify to participate in a clinical trial.

We also conduct collaborative research with the scientists at the Centre for Blood Research (CBR) at the University of British Columbia. A key CBR research theme relevant to the Thrombosis Program is, “Restoring hemostatic balance: Clotting too much or clotting too little”, which involves the search for blood-borne, blood vessel wall, genetic and environmental factors that are altered in clotting or bleeding disorders.
